No. TPU and silicone are not the same material. TPU is a plastic, silicone is a rubber, and they behave differently in the hand, in your pocket and over a year of use. They get confused constantly because a TPU case feels slightly soft, and people reach for the word silicone to describe anything that is not hard plastic.

Is TPU just soft plastic?
Essentially, yes. Thermoplastic polyurethane sits between rigid plastic and rubber. It bends rather than snaps, so a case clicks over the phone without cracking, then holds its shape rather than sagging. That combination is why most printed cases are TPU.
Is silicone better for grip?
Silicone grips better. That is its genuine advantage, and if you drop your phone often it matters. The cost is that the same tackiness catches on a pocket lining, picks up every piece of lint in a bag, and eventually holds onto skin oils as a darkened patch you cannot wash out.
Which one takes a print properly?
This is where the two genuinely separate. TPU takes ink sharply, so a fine line stays a fine line and a colour stays the colour it was drawn in. Silicone is porous and slightly soft, so detail spreads and colour sinks. A gingham check on silicone loses its edges. A marble vein turns to a smudge.
If the case is plain black, it makes no difference. If you are buying it because of how it looks, it makes all of it.
Do both yellow?
Clear cases in both materials yellow with UV exposure, and it is not a fault, it is the plastic reacting to daylight. Silicone additionally stains from hand oils and whatever else it touches. What is TPU, exactly?
Thermoplastic polyurethane is an engineering plastic used where something needs to bend without breaking: ski boots, cable sheathing, medical tubing, the sole of a running shoe. It is described as an elastomer, which means it behaves like rubber while remaining a plastic, and that is the whole trick. Heat it and it softens enough to mould; cool it and it holds the shape permanently.
In a phone case that means a shell you can flex over the corners of the phone without cracking it, which then springs back rather than staying stretched. It is why a TPU case still fits properly after a year of being taken on and off, and why a hard polycarbonate case eventually shows stress marks at the corners.
How they feel in the hand
The difference people notice first is not grip, it is the buttons. On a silicone case the volume and power buttons sit under a thick, soft layer, so the press feels spongy and slightly delayed. On TPU the wall is thinner and firmer, so the click transmits properly and the button feels like the phone's own.
Surface temperature differs too. Silicone warms to the hand quickly and stays warm. TPU stays closer to room temperature, which most people read as feeling cleaner, though neither is better, only different.
What about leather?
Leather is the third material people weigh up, and it answers a different question. It looks and ages beautifully, develops a patina, and feels expensive from the first day. What it does not do is protect. A leather case is usually a thin wrap over a plastic frame, so the drop protection comes from the frame rather than the leather, and the corners are the weak point.
Leather also cannot carry a design. It takes dye and embossing, not print, so a pattern on leather is either debossed or it is a printed film stuck on top. If you want a colour and a texture, leather is lovely. If you want artwork, it is the wrong surface.
Cost is the other consideration. Real leather starts well above a printed case and rises sharply, and most cases sold as leather are polyurethane leather, which is a plastic coating on fabric and behaves nothing like hide.
How long does each one last?
A printed TPU case will outlast the phone in most cases. It does not stretch, the print sits under the surface rather than on it, and there is no clear plastic to discolour. The realistic failure point is the lip around the camera taking repeated knocks.
Silicone has a shorter working life. It stretches at the corners where you pull it on and off, it holds skin oils as darker patches, and lint embeds into the surface rather than sitting on it. A year is a fair expectation; two is optimistic.
So which should you buy?
If you want the most grip available and do not care what the case looks like, buy silicone. It is genuinely better at that one thing.
For everything else, TPU. It holds a design properly, it stays out of the lint, it keeps its shape, and it slides into a pocket without a fight. That is why every case we make is TPU: we are a design brand, and silicone would waste the design.
